Description: A 65-year-old SMART bus driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into six vehicles Monday evening, hospitalizing two people, according to West Bloomfield police.
The accident occurred just after 6 p.m. on Maple Road between Middlebelt and Inkster in West Bloomfield.
The SMART bus was traveling westbound when the driver fell asleep, crossed over the center lane and struck a vehicle, police said. The bus rear-ended another car, which was then struck by another vehicle traveling eastbound. The bus struck four more vehicles before hitting a guardrail, according to police.
The SMART bus only had one passenger at the time of the accident, police said.
The West Bloomfield Fire Department had to evacuate the passenger and driver of one of the vehicles and transported them to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
