Richland County Sheriff's deputies are asking for the community's assistance in identifying several participants in what investigators have classified as a brutal and disturbing fight that was captured on cell phone video.
Investigators say the fight occurred sometime between 3:00 p.m. Thursday, May 16 and 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 17 in the 1500 block of Garden Plaza at the Gonzales Gardens Apartments.
A Richland County Sheriff's Department School Resource Officer was informed by students at Keenan High School about a fight that occurred at the apartment complex. Video of the melee was posted on YouTube and reviewed by the Richland County Sheriff's Department Gang Task Force.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said two female victims, ages 14 and 16, were "brutally" beaten by multiple suspects ranging in age from 14 to 49. The fight apparently stemmed from an ongoing altercation between the victim and suspects.
Investigators are looking to identify those involved in the attack. Lott says a number of those involved in the brawl will likely be charged with assault and battery by mob.
"These youth need to find something more productive to do with their time and not engage in criminal activity," said Lott. Violence like this or any other crime will not be tolerated and if these 'gangs' think they are running the streets they are sadly mistaken."
Investigators are following up on significant leads, and are looking for assistance identifying those responsible for this senseless act of violence.
Anyone with information on the identity of the participants or information about the brawl is urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
